Sao Sao x4 - EP 1 | Korean vs Western Skincare&Make-up Trends

Hi guys! Today's post is a little bit special because I collaborated with my friends and we made a Talk-show-slash-how-to vibe to the video.

I want to focus on the Korean side because nowadays Korean Trends really influence a lot of Thai teens. Korean beauty trends are blended in K-dramas, K-pop and Music videos. We cannot deny that the rise of k-beauty partly comes from those Korean entertainment industry and becomes a phenomenon that is transforming the beauty industry in other sides of the world. You can definitely say that skincare is a part of Korean culture right now.

I like to take a closer look into Korean Skincare trends because as I already mentioned in my very first blog post that I love spend time on taking care of my skin as aging sign is easily and firstly noticed on the skin.
Korean skin trends mostly focus on...
- Natural skincare (playing with strange natural extracts like snail goo, horse milk, salmon eggs, Ginseng, etc.)
- Glowy and brightening skin which leads to whiter of the overall skin complexion
- Deep hydration: layering skincare products into many steps from the lightest texture to the thickest

1. Face Masks to add up extra moisture and make the skin glow even with bare face
This is another pampering routine to add more deep hydration to the skin. Korean and even Japanese tend to do it everyday. For example, in many K-dramas, characters like to spend time on doing their beauty activities like wearing face masks at home.

"You Who Came From the Star"
"The Time We Were Not In Love"

Even a soldier in "Descendants of the Sun" also didn't forget to extra pamper himself!

2. In order to show the glowiness and brightness of the skin, you can notice that main actresses in K-dramas don't wear heavy make-up or seem like they don't even wear any make-up at all. They believe that the shinier the skin looks, the healthier the skin seems to be.

"Who You Came From the Star"
Shine is mostly made intense around the forehead, cheekbones and nose bridge

Shine represents the deep care moisture and hydration under the skin

3. Although the make-up is made to be very skin-like and is kept to be very minimal and low coverage, There is no dramatic eye makeup, sharp contour on the jaw line or strong eyebrows shape. However, the lips are always emphasized and it is a must. Their most used colors are bright neon pink with slightly reddish, cool tone pink with a hint of violet or peachy/orange tone. Korean female leading roles in K-dramas play an important and influential role in sparking lip make-up trends over Asia.

"Hotel King"

Some examples are...

- Song Hye Kyo from "Descendants of the Sun"
She wears Laneige lip in the series and it has become very popular since then and was out of stock for a very long time.

- Lee Sung Kyung from "Weightlifting Fairy Kim-Bok-Joo"
Her lipstick from Laneige (but in different color) also sparks a huge trend after the lip from the same line of Laneige I mentioned above.

- Jun Ji-hyun of “The Legend of the Blue Sea” has also driven some Chinese viewers to search for "Hera Rouge Holic No.147" lip product she used on their popular website Baidu under the term “mermaid lips.”

In conclusion, as you can see, all the trends of skincare and make-up actually hide and blend in to almost every K-drama through product tie-in but not in a forcing way. But we can also say that the trends come from those k-dramas themselves. Who benefits from this? of course, the trend helps boost the attention of consumers to the brand.

  1. I really like your blog!
Can you please suggest me any skincare that can reduce skin redness and dark spots on my face. My skin is a combination skin, so it's not really oily.
By the way really like the look and the video :)

Though I have a very oily skin, I still fall in love with the dewy look.
But I also like the Western makeup style. I think it looks really high class and fabulous.
And of course, our video is even more fabulous lol.
Hope I will collaborate with you again miss Nelly!
